Ajuga Reptans

Taxonomy

  • Family Name: Lamiaceae
  • Botanical Name:  Ajuga reptans
  • Common Name: Ajuga, Blue Bugle,  Bugleherb, Bugleweed, Bugle Weed, Carpet Bugle

Description

Historically, Ajuga was a common choice, externally applied, to stop bleeding (what herbalists call an astringent, styptic herb). It can also be dried and made into wound-healing salves. While Ajuga reptans has historically been used both to arrest internal bleeding and as a heart tonic, it’s too dangerous an herb to experiment with internally.

Do not confuse this plant with Ajuga nipponensis which is an herb. The whole plant is used to make medicine. Ajuga nipponensis is used to treat coughs, fluid retention, and pain and swelling (inflammation). It is also used to boost the body’s defence (immunity) and to prevent liver disease.

Toxicity

All parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested.
