May 23, 2026 “Vermiculture Composting Workshop – with Sonia Gonsalves and June Ballantyne”
On May 23, our horticulture club hosted two Vermicomposting Workshops, each with 10 registrants interested in learning how to turn kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich worm castings.
The sessions were led by June Ballantyne and Sonia Gonsalves, who shared information and tips from decades of experience. Together, they introduced participants to the basics of vermicomposting—what it is, why it works, and the starring species behind it: the hardworking red wiggler worm (Eisenia fetida).
Attendees learned the essentials of a healthy worm colony, including moisture, bedding, temperature, and feeding. The session explored the many benefits of vermicomposting for soil health, the environment, and especially edible crops.
The hands-on portion was the culmination of questions, discussion, and excitement about beginning worm composting at home. Each participant then helped assemble their own vermicomposting bin, complete with bedding and a starter colony of red wigglers to take home.
