Stewarding a Living Legacy: the Restoration of the Vanier Garry Oak Grove
What Comox Valley gardeners can learn from this community project – with Jim Boulter, Karen Cummins and Eloise Holland
The Garry oaks in Vanier Nature Park are a remnant of a Garry oak forest that once covered 160 square km and stretched from the Comox peninsula to present-day Smith Road. Comox Valley Nature is working to restore these oaks to ensure their survival, along with the exceptional suite of plants that grow there. Members of the Vanier Oaks restoration team will discuss the project and how you can protect, enhance and restore Garry oaks through your gardening and at the community level.
Karen Cummins has led and developed woodland, meadow and watershed stewardship projects in the Comox Valley. She brings her skills in arboriculture and sustainable horticulture, as well as a keen interest in local ecology, to the Vanier Garry Oaks project.
Jim Boulter is the past president of Comox Valley Nature and remains active with the Society. He has been monitoring the hydrology of the park and is passionate about researching the documented and mapped history of the site.
Eloise Holland has worked on a variety of habitat restoration projects, including the Champlain Woods Bur Oaks and Churchill School outdoor classroom in Ottawa.
This will be a Zoom meeting only:
- All ZOOM meetings will begin at 7:00 pm.
- All IN-PERSON meetings: doors will open at 6:30 pm, and meetings start at 7:15 pm.
- In-person meetings (presentation only) may also be accessible via ZOOM from your home.
