Janet Campbell – Opportunity Table Chair
joined the CVHS in 2015 and was happy to work in the horticultural library. At present, I hold the position of Chair, Opportunity Table.
My family and I have lived in the Comox Valley since 1993 in the house that we are in at present. Over the years we have made many changes to our garden. We decided to concentrate on growing vegetables in our raised beds and last spring, we had a custom greenhouse built. The plan was to try to grow as much of our own food as possible especially with the challenges imposed on all of us this year.
Growing up in Quebec, my father was the gardener in the family and loved tending to his tomato plants. That kinda stuck with me as I grew up and there were always tomato plants in whatever garden I created. When we moved here, I got involved in seed saving of heirloom varieties of tomatoes and grew hundreds of tomatoes, some to sell and some to give to friends. So, as well as an abundance of fruit trees, apple, cherry, blueberries, raspberries, and a stubborn stone fruit tree with apricots, nectarines, and plums, we are kept busy tending to them all. Our citrus trees do provide some fruit; last year we had 22 lemons on two potted trees in our greenhouse.
Over the many years of gardening in different parts of the country, I still enjoy the smell of freshly turned earth and the promise of a new harvest. My thanks to all my gardening friends and members of the CVHS for their experience and advice to make me become a better gardener.
