Also in bloom are plenty of azaleas, and of course there are the usual delights such as the secret garden and the peaceful pond area. You will most likely be treated to a guided tour by the host. See you there!

Open Garden hosted by: June & Gord Farquhar
Date: Saturday, May 14, 2016
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

When June and Gord viewed their current property thirty-seven years ago, they knew right away it was the place for them. All it had was an ugly mobile home, an unfinished workshop, and a grassy area. Their dream was to build their own house, and put in a garden. Since June worked at Farquharson Farms, she had great exposure to a wide range of plants.

Luckily, June and Gord’s property has a good supply of water, and with the surrounding woods it is sheltered from weather extremes. Who says Merville is in a “cold belt”? There is a ten foot tall windmill palm on their property! The original soil was very rocky but copious amounts of compost has been added over the years and the rocks removed so things are growing well. Those rocks have made great edges for the garden beds.

June and Gord’s garden consists of large rhodos, shrubs, fruit trees, and a fenced vegetable area. They have had to co-exist with the deer and the occasional bear. The stick ‘teepees’ around some small plants are from last spring, when they got their newest dog. However, he has not mastered his garden manners quite yet!

June and Gord’s latest project was to have a large pond installed last fall. So named ‘Farquhar’s Brook’, they have begun to plant around it. Next, there is a gazebo in the plans! June thinks this will round out their garden quite well. About half of their 3.5 acre property is still a natural woodland.

Open Garden hosted by: Leslie & John Cox
Date: Saturday, May 14, 2016
Time: 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

“Growing Concern Cottage Garden” – Home of the Duchess of Dirt & Duke of Compost

This diminutive third of an acre, nestled in the heart of rural Black Creek, began a make-over in 1999 when both Leslie and John were presented with an unexpected career change. Four teenagers meant growing food was necessary, so they embarked on expanding their production and set up a table at the local Farmer’s Market. Growing Concern Cottage Garden was born.

That was also the year when Leslie finally got her herb garden. John was enchanted. Ornamental plants and garden design became a passion. Every year, more lawn in the backyard was taken over by mounds of soil, and planted with a variety of perennial Leslie grew from seed. Plant sales were a special treat for the treasures they would often offer up – at prices in keeping with the new budget.

Once the backyard was up to snuff, Leslie announced the front yard needed a make-over. It was to be her garden. There could not be two captains on the ship, and John already had the back garden.

Growing Concern Cottage Garden has evolved to become an intensely planted landscape – filled with an eclectic assimilation of horticultural materials, numbering over 1500, which create waves of altering delights throughout the growing season. Almost no two weeks are the same.

All CVHS members should have received an email notice on May 10th, 2016, noting the address and directions to these two Open Gardens. If you need further information for this tour, please contact the Coordinator: gardentours@comoxvalleyhortsociety.ca on our Contact Us page.

Garden Theme: Urban Permaculture

“Permaculture is the conscious design of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems”  – Bill Mollison

You will be delighted by Lauren’s garden, which is constantly evolving with new and re-invented projects. As Lauren says, “I hold true to the urban permaculturist principle – I eat from my garden. My goal is to create a food forest and to have it self-tending and regenerating.” Lauren is often surprised by what comes up in her garden and what creatures are lurking within it. While her garden could appear a bit disorderly to some, it is as nature intended and there are no straight lines.

Come out and experience this “Urban Farm”.

Barbara Simonson Garden

Spring weather can be iffy, but rain or shine, you are sure to enjoy touring this expansive garden on a half-acre property.

Barbara began developing their treed lot about twenty-five years ago…starting with the removal of a few trees. About eighteen have been removed over the years, but several very tall ones (70 ft / 21 m!) remain.

Multiple deliveries of soil and mulch…about fifty cubic yards all told…and with help from her husband and son, Barbara’s grand design has taken shape. A pergola, three patios, and a lovely bridge crossing over interconnected water features are just some of the delights in this incredible garden. Oh, did we mention the numerous garden benches set strategically, inviting visitors to sit and enjoy for a bit?

Come out and enjoy touring this oasis filled with several magnificent large perennials and shrubs. The list includes: four magnolia trees, two cherry trees (an ornamental and a UBC hybridized Bing cross), two dogwood trees, a gingko tree, numerous rhodos (many of which are in bloom), roses (already in bud!), deciduous azalea, lilacs, and much more!

Robert Argall Garden

Robert has extended another invitation to CVHS members to attend a guided tour of his garden again on Saturday, April 9th. It has only been a month since he opened the garden gates to us for the first tour, but…

The magnolias (five of the nine), the camellias (all eighteen of them), and the ornamental cherry trees (all but two) are all in bloom at the same time! Robert declares this incredible floral display on all of the shrubs noted has never, ever happened on this scale before in his garden.

Also…after waiting twenty-five years and pretty much giving up hope of ever seeing one of his species rhododendrons (Rex) bloom…Robert is excited to show it off to us. It is covered in buds which are just starting to open!

And finally…the daffodils, hyacinths, early tulips, and wood anemones are all behaving themselves. In fact, there are several thousand out on display now! A sight to behold.

Please take note this is a guided tour which will start at 1:00 p.m.

All CVHS Members should have received an email notice on April 3rd, 2016, noting the address and directions to this Open Garden. If you need further information for this tour, please contact the Coordinator: gardentours@comoxvalleyhortsociety.ca on our Contact Us page.

Open Garden Tour: Two members’ gardens – Ann Chevrier and Joan Wynden
Date: Sunday, April 19, 2015
Time: 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

ANN CHEVRIER GARDEN

Ann’s garden has quite a few rhododendrons which are already putting on displays. There are about 150 rhodos which extend the display for over a period of two months or longer. There is also a pretty crevice rock garden. It was designed and built by Dany Fortin one year ago and looking quite settled now. Two wee ponds and a small waterfall built by Angie Richardson of Guided Gardening & Design are also sure to delight garden visitors. Ann is very pleased to be sharing both of these newest additions to her landscape with us. Definitely a must-see!

JOAN WYNDEN GARDEN

Joan has a well-established shade garden in her backyard. There is a greenhouse where she does lots of propagating. Her garden in the front yard is terraced with lovely trees and shrubs. This is also where you will find the raised vegetable beds because there is plenty of sun in this part of the property. You definitely do not want to miss this garden as there is a lot of diversity in a relatively small space!
