June 2011 Open Gardens

At the time of writing, we have two wonderful open gardens confirmed for June. Mark this date on your calendar and be prepared to be wowed!! We have been invited to bring a bagged lunch to the Wurz garden and to enjoy a quiet stay in the garden. Let’s hope for awesome weather as this sounds like a wonderful way to spend a while on a sunny day.

Sunday, June 5 (11am) – Open Garden (and nursery) at 4367 Gordon Road (Lynn and Paul Wurz). Directions: Follow highway 19 N of Campbell River (towards Port Hardy). Go past Painters’ Lodge and the pulp mill and turn left onto Duncan Bay Road (watch for industrial cranes on the left). Duncan Bay Road becomes Gordon Road at a sign marked Hidden Acres (.8km). Hidden Acres is your destination. Watch for a sign on the gate. What you will see: Check out the website at www.hiddenacresrhodos.com for details.

Sunday, June 5 (10am-5pm) – Open Garden at 7896 Fairview Road (John and Leslie Cox). This garden is just off the highway between Courtenay and Campbell River so you could stop in on your way up or on your way back. Directions: Follow Highway 19 to Black Creek (north of Courtenay). Watch for the sign for the Black Creek Hall and take the next right onto Fairview. Coming from Campbell River, the house is almost directly behind the Black Creek Mennonite Brethren Church so you will turn left at the next street (there is a left hand turn lane onto Fairview). Parking: At the end of the street in the church’s rear parking lot. What you will see: an intensely planted garden full of shrubs and interesting perennials, a new veggie garden and a greenhouse full of tomatoes. The pond has three goldfish and 10 frogs. A mama robin has built a nest at the garden gate and there is a family of robins in the cedar tree.

Thanks, Lynn and Paul and John and Leslie for opening your lovely gardens for us!!

May 2011 Open Gardens

Here are some dates to mark on your calendar if you want to take an opportunity or two to visit some of your fellow club members’ wonderful gardens:

Saturday, May 7 (10am – 4pm) – Open Garden and Plant Sale at 2128 Towhee Court, Comox (Wolfgang/Wilma Hoefgen). Parking: along the road. Directions: Take Anderton Rd (heading out of Comox), turn left onto Bolt, right onto Murrullet and left onto Towhee.

Sunday, May 15 (1 – 4 pm) – Open Garden at 417 King Road, Comox (Ann Chevrier).
Parking: along the road. Directions: from Balmoral, turn left onto Torrence, right onto Casey and left onto King. Watch for the white gates. What you will see: over 100 rhodos including 6 very old ones already on the property when Ann and her late husband purchased the property in 1985, a brand-new pond just installed this spring, and a variety of mature trees to make shady places in this southwest-facing garden.

Sunday, May 15 (1-5pm) – Open Garden at 122 Stafford Road, Comox (Henrie Beaudoin)
Parking: Along Hawkins Road and Stafford. Directions: from Comox Avenue, turn left onto Pritchard, right onto Balmoral to the 4-way stop at MacDonald Wood. Balmoral becomes Hawkins Rd straight ahead. Begin the climb up the hill and prepare to pull over to the right at Mariner’s Lookout on Comox Bay as you descend the hill. What you will see: Hand made gates invite you in to follow the rock paths that wrap around the property leading you into landscaped rooms with a spectacular view of Comox Bay and the mountains that frame it. A variety of blooming shrubs, trees, perennials and bulbs show off to anyone who wants to take a minute to appreciate them. The vegetable garden will, hopefully, be partially planted for early harvesting.

Sunday, May 29 (10am – 4pm) – Open Garden and Plant Sale at 5122 Frederick Place, Courtenay (Cec/Lo Lockhard). Parking: along the road. Directions: Take Old Island Highway heading north and turn right onto Parker Road. The house is on the corner of Parker and Frederick. What you will see: Lo is making no promises about what will be in bloom but I know it doesn’t matter, the garden will be lovely just the same!

Sunday, May 29 (10am-4pm) – Open Garden at 620 11th Street, Courtenay (Sylvia/Richard Kroeker). Sylvia promises some lovely rhodos at this time of year in their delightful whimsical urban garden.

Thanks to all of you who are so willing to share your gardens!
